The north-eastern coastline washed by the northern Cretan Sea is dotted with tens of beaches of global repute while the southern coastline which is washed by the Libyan or Southern Cretan Sea stands out for its lace-like coasts which extend along its entire length.
To the north and east you can visit Istro (with its emerald green waters, white sands), the quiet Itanos bay, the exotic Vai with its famous palm trees, the cosmopolitan Elounda, Almyros (with its shallow waters, on-beach services), Voulisma also known as Chrysi Ammos (with its white sands), the remote Xirokambos and the calm sandy Hiona beach.
On the southern coastline, choose from the large beach at Koutsounari (isolated with grey sand), Myrtos (grey pebbles and deep blue waters), Makrigialos (on-beach services, family-orientated, shallow/safe waters and sandy), the quiet Goudouras beach (with pebbles and a few umbrellas) and the nearby Kalo Nero.
